Name that fish!

March 10, 2010

So here’s something for a change of pace. . .

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with loads of different people from many different countries and everyone seems to have a similar theme of ‘getting outta town’ and to have a good time.  The intensity in which people pursue this theme varies from moderate to ‘full starboard volley’.  The results are spectacular, if not terrifying.  One of my close mates, Tom from Germany, who happens to be a former student of mine and is now a Divemaster Trainee (DMT) is the type of person you wish you could attach a video camera to and then watch in amazement the follies of his experience on Ko Tao and living in Thailand.  If he tells you he’ll punch you in the face because you or your girlfriend are acting like total idiots, he means it.  He’s a real stand up guy all-in-all, a budding young diver and I’d back him up in damn near anything.

Anyway,

The last full moon party, held on Ko Phangan about a week or so ago was the epicenter of some noteworthy debauchery.  A team of divers was sent over from Ko Tao on the ferry to hand out pamphlets and promote the dive shop.
Six went over.  Only three came back.
Two were completely MIA and the question posed when someone would walk into the shop the next morning was
“Hey, have you seen Tom this morning?”
“No, isn’t he back with you?”
“Haha, no.  He’s in fucking prison!”
Thai jail to be exact but yeah, his first Full Moon experience was held behind bars.  Now, whatever you think of when you imagine Thai jail, doesn’t really matter because Tom, the good hearted lad that he is, has offered to share his experience.

Here’s where you come in.  At the bottom of this page is a picture (one that I took) of a particular fish from Ko Tao.  The first person to correctly identify the fish complete with the Latin name will be the recipient of an email personally written by Tom (not to worry, his English is excellent and a bit of a writer himself) regarding his thoughts and perspectives of Thailand, Western culture and such.  But mostly it’ll be about his time jail.  Leave your guess in the comments section of this post and I’ll arrange to have Tom write you this letter.  Once sent, I’ll post the same letter on this blog a week or so later so you can check it out.  You are allowed to change your guess.  Good luck!

I’m gonna wager myself a guess and call that one Saddleback clownfish! Or as I like to call it, the Amphiprion polymnus haha. That damn well better be right cause I had to do like 3 whole google searches before I found this little bugger and it had better not been for nothing.

    • Well congratulations you speedy sunnavabitch, you win. I should have had you name the polyp underneath. . . But congrats all the same, you narrowly edged Cam who placed both second and unfortunately, last. I’ll have Tom send you that letter soon.

Hey Ben, nice to know that there’s always a good amount of debauchery going on, anyway the fish you have there is the Amphiprion polymnus, also known as the Saddleback clownfish or Anemonefish. Its a tough one to find.
